DeLeon Mitchell was born to Alfred and Gussie Mitchell on December 27, 1951. He was the second born of five children ( Bernard, Richard, Janet, and Anthony Mitchell). His parents moved to Willows, from Vallejo, California during the 1950’s. In the small town of Willows, his family attended a Pentecostal church where they performed Capella gospel hymns.

In 1972, DeLeon moved to Sacramento, CA with his mother and siblings and attended Zion church. In 1974, DeLeon married his first wife Gloria, and began driving buses for Regional Transit. Even though DeLeon drove buses for a living, he was actively involved in his churches music ministry. He sang in the choir, and he also was the lead singer for an all male quintet group called the Zionaires.

During the early 1980’s, DeLeon was discovered by gospel music producer Derek Allen. At that time, Mr. Allen played bass guitar for Pearly Gates Missionary Baptist Chruch in Sacramento, CA.

Mr. Allen recalls hearing DeLeon singing for the first time at a music concert held at the California State Capital. “When I first heard him, I was like who is this guy?” Mr. Allen said during a discussion he had with DeLeon’s youngest son Lamont Mitchell in 2010.  Mr. Allen thought DeLeon would be a good fit for their group “the Angelic Supremes,” and later recruited him as their lead singer.

Mr. Allen and DeLeon recorded songs together from 1982-1984. However, none of the music DeLeon recorded with Mr. Allen during that time was ever published. In 2000, DeLeon also sang for another group produced by Mr. Allen called “Poppa Joe & the Harmonizers.” Even though DeLeon was initially apart of the group and co-led two songs (God is so good, & I’ll go all the way), and led one song (God’s got it), these song were eventually left off the final release of the album in 2003.

In addition, DeLeon also sang for a church group called Ecclesiastes between 1989-1990. He recorded a single called “Give your life to him” which was a gospel version of the song “come back to me” produced by Gerald Albright. The group performed in Stockholm Sweeden, and received international publicity. Also during this time, DeLeon recorded a secular song with a producer named Bowdy called “I wanna sex you.” This was a single for a solo album, that got some air play on one of Sacramento’s radio stations, but only this single was released.

Over the course of his life, DeLeon recorded music with numerous groups and producers. However, none of the songs DeLeon sang where ever sold. He never earned residual income for all of his services. Sadly, due to certain health complications, DeLeon’s music career came to an end in 2010. He passed away at 58 years old. He is proceeded by his oldest son Ponce DeLeon Mitchell Jr., youngest son Paul Lamont Mitchell, grandson DePonce DeLeon Mitchell Jr. II, & grand daughter Malia Mitchell.
